As we were traveling from New Delhi to Haridwar, I took this picture in one of the railway station where the train stopped by. Delhi to Haridwar is a over night journey, usually its much faster Via Car, but we preferred the train.

Indian Railways has one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world, transporting over 18 million passengers and more than 2 million tonnes of freight daily, Oh boy, that is big . Railways were first introduced to India in 1853 by the British. By 1947, the year of India’s independence, there were 42 rail systems. In the year 1951 all the railway systems were nationalized as one unit, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. Indian Railways operates both long distance and suburban rail systems on a multi-gauge network of broad, metre and narrow gauges. It also owns locomotive and coach production facilities.
